Getting energized in an extracurricular club

I always loved clubs at school. In high school, I was involved in several. I couldn’t get enough. These days, it’s not much different for me, except now I’m hosting the club.

After I went to Space Academy last summer (June 2011), I decided I wanted to start a space and aeronautics club at my school. We had a lot of fun with about 12-14regularly attending students in sixth and seventh grades. It was a lot of fun, and I looked forward to our meetings each week.

It’s the third week of school, and I decided it was time to get our club going again. I made posters and spread the word in science classes. Today was our first meeting. We had 25 students attend. Of the 25, 12 were returning students from last year. There were four eighth graders, ten seventh graders, and eleven sixth graders. Not only do we have the new sixth graders, but we also had some new seventh graders join us. Also, I know of at least three more students who will come to club but couldn’t make it today.

We had a lot of fun at our first meeting. We made paper airplanes with info about ourselves written in them. Then, we flew them around the room picking up and flying whatever plane landed next to us. When time was up, we shared the information from the person’s plane we had. It was a great get to know you activity!

Then, we talked club business. We’re thinking about renaming our club. I suggested the Longhorn Air and Space Student Organization (LASSO), which I had thought a little corny, but the kids seemed to like it. We’re still thinking and coming up with ideas.

We also decided to meet next week even though I’ll have to cut our club short to get to a meeting. My students really wanted to come even if it was for a shorter period of time!

I’m so excited for this year in club and what we’ll accomplish. I love Tuesday afternoons!
